Suits
One suit, five looks: getting the most from a single suit
By sneakersInn team · Updated
A single navy suit gives you five outfits: the full suit with a tie, the full suit with an open collar, the jacket as a blazer with jeans or chinos, the trousers with a shirt and knit, and the suit relaxed with a tee and sneakers. That turns one purchase into outfits for funerals, weddings, the office and weekends.
| Look | Pieces | Where to wear it |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Formal | Full suit, white shirt, tie, black oxfords | Interviews, funerals, formal weddings |
| 2. Smart, no tie | Full suit, light blue shirt open, brown loafers | Weddings, church, dinners |
| 3. Jacket as blazer | Suit jacket, white tee or oxford, dark jeans or grey trousers | Office, dates, parties |
| 4. Trousers alone | Suit trousers, oxford shirt, fine knit | Office, church |
| 5. Relaxed | Full suit, white tee or knitted polo, white sneakers | Parties, creative offices, events |
Which suit works best for this?
A navy, single-breasted, two-button suit in a plain or very fine weave, with a slim but not tight cut. Navy works for all five looks; charcoal and black are harder to split. See navy vs charcoal.
1. How do I wear it formally?
White or light blue shirt, a plain or finely patterned tie, black oxfords and a black belt. Add a white pocket square for weddings.
2. How do I wear it without a tie?
Open the top button of a crisp shirt with a collar that stands up on its own. Brown loafers or derbies make it warmer and less formal.
3. Can the suit jacket be worn as a blazer?
Yes, if it's navy and plain. Wear it over a white tee, an oxford shirt or a fine knit with dark jeans, grey trousers or stone chinos. Avoid jeans that are close to the jacket's navy; contrast looks deliberate.
4. How do I wear the trousers alone?
With an oxford shirt, a fine crewneck knit or a polo, and derbies or loafers. See layering a knit over a shirt.
5. How do I make it relaxed?
Swap the shirt for a tee or knitted polo and the shoes for clean white leather sneakers. Our guide on how to wear a suit with sneakers has the rules.
Won't the trousers wear out faster?
Yes, trousers usually wear out before the jacket. Rotate looks so you don't wear the trousers every time, and consider buying a second pair of matching trousers if the shop or tailor offers it. See how to care for a suit.
What else do I need to make all five looks?
- Two shirts: white and light blue
- A white tee and a knitted polo
- A navy or grey fine knit
- Dark jeans
- Black oxfords, brown loafers and white sneakers
- One tie and one pocket square
Most of these are in the 5 clothing basics every man should buy before anything else.
Questions
Will people notice I'm wearing the same suit?
Far less than you think, especially when the shirt, shoes and styling change.
Does this work with a linen suit?
Partly. Linen jackets work brilliantly as blazers; linen suits are too relaxed for look 1.
Is it really worth owning a suit if I can do this?
Yes. See the benefits of owning a good suit.
