Layering a knit over a shirt: the smart-casual shortcut
By sneakersInn team · Updated
A fine knit over a collared shirt is the quickest way to look smart casual: it adds polish without a blazer, works in air-conditioned offices and suits chinos, jeans and tailored trousers. Use a fine-gauge crewneck or V-neck, tuck the collar inside the neckline with the points out, let a little cuff show, and keep the shirt hem tucked in or hidden.
| Detail | How to get it right |
|---|---|
| Knit | Fine-gauge crewneck or V-neck, fitted |
| Shirt | Oxford or poplin with a collar that stands up, such as a button-down |
| Collar | Inside the neckline, points over the knit |
| Cuffs | About 1 cm of shirt cuff showing, or fold both back together |
| Hem | Shirt tucked in; knit ends at the belt |
Why does this work so well?
It combines the structure of a shirt with the softness of a knit, so it looks dressed but relaxed. It's also practical in Accra: take off the knit when you step outside, put it back on in the office.
Which shirt collars work best?
Button-down collars stay in place under a knit. Spread collars can work but may slip under the neckline. Avoid floppy, unlined collars.
Should the shirt be tucked?
Yes. A shirt hanging out below a knit looks untidy. If you prefer untucked, choose a shorter shirt that ends above the knit's hem.
Five combinations
| Knit | Shirt | Trousers | Shoes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Navy crewneck | White oxford | Stone chinos | Brown loafers |
| Grey crewneck | Light blue oxford | Navy chinos | White leather sneakers |
| Olive V-neck | White poplin | Grey trousers | Dark brown derbies |
| Cream crewneck | Denim shirt | Navy trousers | Suede sneakers |
| Black crewneck | White oxford | Black jeans | Black loafers |
How do colours pair?
Keep the shirt lighter than the knit for an easy contrast: white or pale blue under navy, grey, olive or black. See colour matching for men.
Can I add a tie?
Yes, especially with a V-neck. It's a good business casual look. See crewneck vs V-neck vs turtleneck.
