Knitwear fabrics: cotton, merino and blends compared
By sneakersInn team · Updated
For Accra, choose cotton or linen-blend knits for daytime and fine merino for air-conditioned rooms, evenings and travel. Cashmere is beautiful but too warm for most days here, and acrylic is cheap but traps heat and pills quickly. The yarn decides how a knit feels, how long it lasts and how you wash it.
| Yarn | Warmth | Breathability | Odour resistance | Durability | Care | Accra verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cotton | Low | High | Low | Good | Easy | Best everyday choice |
| Linen or linen blend | Lowest | Highest | Medium | Good | Easy | Best for hot days |
| Fine merino | Medium | High | High | Good | Gentle | Best for indoors and travel |
| Cashmere | High | Medium | Medium | Lower | Delicate | Travel to cold places |
| Silk blend | Low | High | Medium | Lower | Delicate | Smart evening knits |
| Acrylic | Medium-high | Low | Low | Pills fast | Easy | Avoid where you can |
Why is cotton the everyday choice?
Cotton knits are cool, soft and easy to wash. They're the right yarn for knitted polos, knit tees and light crewnecks in the heat. Cotton can stretch when wet, so dry it flat.
Why linen?
Linen is the coolest yarn and has a crisp, slightly textured feel. Pure linen knits can feel rough at first and soften with washing. Linen and cotton blends are softer and very comfortable in Accra.
What makes merino different?
Merino wool comes from merino sheep and has very fine fibres, so it feels soft rather than itchy. It handles moisture well and resists odour, which means you can wear it more than once between washes. Fine merino knits are thin enough for air-conditioned offices and evenings.
Is cashmere worth it?
For travel to colder countries, yes. Cashmere is very soft and warm but pills more easily and needs gentle care. In Accra, it rarely makes sense day to day.
What about blends?
Blends combine strengths: cotton and linen for coolness and softness; merino and silk for smoothness; a little nylon for strength. Blends with mostly acrylic or polyester are cheaper but warmer and pill faster.
How do I check a knit before buying?
- Read the label for the main fibre.
- Look at the gauge. Fine, tight stitches for Accra. See knitwear in a hot country.
- Stretch it gently. It should spring back.
- Rub two areas together. If it fuzzes quickly, it will pill.
