Dressing for occasions in Ghana
What to wear to a corporate dinner or gala
By sneakersInn team · Updated
For a corporate dinner, wear a well-fitted dark suit (navy, charcoal or black), a white shirt, a tie and polished black shoes. For a gala or award night marked "black tie", wear a dinner suit with a bow tie; if you don't own one, a black or midnight navy suit with a black tie is the accepted fallback at most events in Ghana. Smart traditional wear is also welcome at many Ghanaian galas.
| Invitation says | Wear |
|---|---|
| Business or corporate | Dark suit, white shirt, tie, black oxfords |
| Formal | Dark suit and tie, or formal traditional wear |
| Black tie | Dinner suit, bow tie, black polished shoes |
| Black tie optional | Dinner suit, or dark suit and black tie |
| Cocktail | Suit, tie optional, or a smart blazer outfit |
| African formal or traditional | Kente, kaftan or a formal print outfit |
What exactly is black tie?
A dinner suit (tuxedo) in black or midnight navy with satin or grosgrain lapels, matching trousers, a white dress shirt, a black bow tie and black polished or patent shoes. See the 5 dress codes every man should understand.
Can I wear traditional wear to a gala?
At many Ghanaian events, yes, and it often stands out for the right reasons. A formal kaftan or kente with polished leather shoes or ahenema is appropriate. Check that the invitation doesn't specify Western black tie only.
How do I stand out without overdoing it?
One detail: a burgundy or emerald velvet jacket, a patterned bow tie, a white pocket square or a good watch. Keep the rest classic. See pocket squares.
What about the heat?
Most galas are indoors with air conditioning, but arrival and photos often aren't. Choose lightweight wool and carry a handkerchief. See suit fabrics explained.
Final checks
- Suit pressed, shirt crisp.
- Shoes polished. See how to polish leather shoes.
- Tie knotted neatly with a dimple. See ties explained.
- Haircut and grooming done.
Questions
