Dressing for occasions in Ghana
What to wear to a naming ceremony (outdooring) in Ghana
By sneakersInn team · Updated
At a Ghanaian naming ceremony, often called an outdooring, white is the usual choice because it represents joy and celebration. Men commonly wear a white kaftan, a white smock, white or cream traditional cloth, or a white shirt with light trousers. If the family announces colours, follow them. Many ceremonies start very early in the morning, so dress for comfort as well as for photos.
| Outfit | Pieces | Shoes |

What is an outdooring?
In many Ghanaian traditions, a baby is formally named and presented to the family and community a few days after birth, often on the eighth day and often at dawn. Customs differ between ethnic groups and families, so the family's guidance always comes first.
Why white?
White is widely associated with joy, purity and victory in Ghanaian celebrations, so it suits welcoming a new child. It's the same reason white is worn at thanksgiving services and some celebrations of long lives. See funeral dressing in Ghana for how colours work at other events.
How do I keep white clean at an early event?
Choose crisp cotton or linen, iron it the night before, carry a handkerchief, and wear dark-soled shoes or sandals so dust on the ground doesn't show on your feet. See linen shirts for men.
What should I avoid?
- Black or dark red, which many associate with mourning
- Very casual clothes like shorts and slides
- Anything louder than the family
What should I bring?
A gift for the baby or parents is customary; ask the family what's appropriate.
Questions
Can I wear a suit?
A light suit with a white shirt is fine, but white traditional wear or a white shirt and light trousers is more common.
What if I don't own white traditional wear?
A white linen shirt and cream trousers is respectful. See Friday wear: mixing African prints with modern pieces.
