How to build outfits from clothes you already own

    By sneakersInn team · Updated

You can build far more outfits from what you own by starting with your neutral pieces, building each outfit from the bottom up (trousers, then shoes, then top, then layer), and changing the look with a layer or different shoes rather than buying something new. Photograph the combinations you like so getting dressed takes a minute.

    The five-step method

    1. Sort. Pull out everything that fits and is in good condition. Group by trousers, tops, layers and shoes.
    2. Find the neutrals. Navy, grey, white, black, stone, olive and denim go with each other. These are your base. See colour matching for men.
    3. Build from the bottom. Pick trousers, then shoes, then a top, then a layer.
    4. Change one piece. Swap only the shoes or the layer to get a new outfit from the same base.
    5. Photograph. Save your best ten combinations on your phone.

What makes an old outfit feel new?

    • Rolling sleeves or trouser hems
    • Tucking a shirt you usually wear out
    • Adding a watch, belt or cap
    • Switching sneakers for loafers
